Grandma Gwynn’s Thanksgiving Rolls

This versatile family dough can become Thanksgiving rolls, cinnamon or orange rolls, breakfast cake, bubble loaf, or pecan buns.

Ingredients
- 2 cups warm water
- ⅓ cup sugar
- 2 packages active dry yeast
- 1 Tbsp salt
- 2 cups sifted flour
- 2 eggs
- ⅓ cup soft shortening
- 4½ cups sifted flour
Make it yours
- Cinnamon and sugar for cinnamon rolls or bubble loaf
- Butter, raisins, and nuts for bubble loaf
- Butter, brown sugar, and pecans for pecan buns
- Orange-roll or breakfast-cake fillings of your choice

Method

Combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast.

Add the salt and 2 cups sifted flour. Beat for 2 minutes in a stand mixer or with an electric beater.

Add the eggs and soft shortening. Beat for 1 minute.

Blend in the remaining 4½ cups sifted flour and stir until a dough forms.

Let the dough rest for 20 minutes.

Roll out and shape as desired. Let rise until puffy and ready to bake, usually a little less than 1 hour.

Bake at 350°F or 375°F for 15–20 minutes, depending on the pan and the number or size of rolls.
